Mada Hashem
Dr., PhD, Research Associate, Department of Radiology, Cumming School of Medicine, University of Calgary, Alberta, Canada
Dr. Mada Hashem is a research associate in Dr. Jeff Dunn’s lab at the University of Calgary, specializing in neuroimaging techniques that combine Near-Infrared Spectroscopy (NIRS) and Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) to investigate brain physiology and structure in both health and disease. She completed her PhD in Biomedical Engineering at the University of Calgary, where she developed a multimodal NIRS-MRI approach to monitor oxygen metabolism in mouse models of neurological disorders.
Her current research focuses on applying NIRS and MRI in people with Multiple Sclerosis (MS) to explore the role of brain hypoxia (low oxygen) in disease progression and to examine how physiological changes—such as inflammation, white matter damage, and altered cerebral perfusion—contribute to MS pathology and progression. Dr. Hashem is a recipient of the Alberta Graduate Excellence Scholarship, the Eyes High International Doctoral Scholarship, and the T. Chen Fong Postdoctoral Fellowship in Medical Imaging Science.
